Zohran Mamdani Vows a 'New Era' for New York City in First Address
In a inauguration day in the mayor's office, Zohran Mamdani committed to “transform” New York City, declaring “a different age” and an ambitious start to his term.
A Historic Mayor
The new political star, who just a year ago remained a virtually unknown state assemblyman, is the city's first mayor born in Africa. He additionally marked a milestone by being the inaugural to be sworn in using the Islamic holy text.

The inauguration was a dual event, beginning with a midnight oath-taking in a old subway station. He was formally sworn in on the front steps of city hall by Vermont independent senator Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's ascent as a victory over political establishments.
A Sweeping Policy Agenda
Mamdani now faces one of the most unrelenting jobs in American politics, with a plan featuring:
- Free childcare
- Fare-free public buses
- A cap on rents for approximately 1 million households
- A pilot of city-run grocery stores
The projected $10 billion price tag of these initiatives may prove difficult to finance. Mamdani has vowed to increase levies for the wealthiest New Yorkers and corporations. However, as a city subject to the state government, he will require the cooperation of Governor Kathy Hochul.
Managing Political Headwinds
The new mayor will deal with apprehension from some members of the Jewish community concerned about his past stances regarding Israel. Tensions were revealed during the transition when a senior aide stepped down over controversial past tweets.
Mamdani has moved to smooth over these concerns by convincing Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to stay on, avoiding the optics of losing a Jewish police chief.
On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “communist” and warned of withholding federal funding. Despite this, a recent meeting between the two was described as unexpectedly cordial.
The Basic Challenges of Governing
Ultimately, New York mayors are judged on their success in delivering basic services: sanitation, reducing the rodent problem, repairing potholes, and making sure reliable subway operation.
Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams highlighted his administration's public safety record, citing historically low numbers of murders and gun violence in 2025, with murders reported.
As his work begins, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Queens apartment to the historic mayoral residence. The previous occupant offered a unusual piece of advice about a supposed resident spirit in the home, which reportedly only haunts those who fail to “do right by the city.”
Mamdani concluded his address with a direct statement: “The work has only just begun.”
